If you are looking for an “affordable circumnavigator” this may be your boat! Designed by Robert A. Smith and built by Cascade Yachts in Portland, Oregon the Cascade 36′ followed the earlier 29′ and 42′ designs. The hulls were all built with a solid roving layup, bullet-proof (there used to be a 45 embedded sample on display at the factory.

I understand Willow’s hull was laid in 1972, Interior finished In-Factory, and she underwent an Eight-Year Refit by the Prior Shop-Manager of Cascade Yacht. Finished in 2004, the Trunk Cabin was raised 2″ for 6′ 3″ Headroom, and “Sugar-Scoop” Stern Transom Extension added.

The layout is classic cruiser proven; V-berth forward, with head and storage. The comfortable salon has a long settee to starboard with a raised dinette on port with storage below. Wow – look at that table! The U-shape Galley has great storage, a double SS sink, pressure water, 3-burner Force Ten Stove w/ oven, and Adler Barbour 12Volt Refrigeration. The stand-up Nav-station has instruments, drawers and a handy trash-can close to the cook. A deep comfortable quarter berth follows to aft. Below the floor, is additional Aft Ballast – 300lbs. to Balance Anchor Chain, Domestic Water Tank, and Waste Holding Tank. The Engine access is below the companionway with neat NEMA 2000 wiring. The Diesel is a clean 2008 30HP Yanmar 3JH4E, 3-Cylinder, Freshwater-Cooled, with only 1,476 hours. The 2012 Stainless Steel Shaft is 1 1/4″ in diameter, with a Campbell Sailor Low Drag 3-Blade Bronze Prop.

The 2018 Furling Headsail is on a Hood 808SL Furler. The 2024 Ullman Mainsail with 3-Reefs runs up a new StrongTrack and drops into a Doyle CradleCover. A Whisker Pole mounts on the mast, important for poling out the genoa offshore. There is a new Spinnaker in a sock, in a race-bag. The two primary winches are 2-Speed Barient 24-45. The Port Furler Winch is a Lewmar 16ST and the Cabin-top Mounted Trim Winches behind the clutches are Lewmar 30’s. There is also a Bronze Lewmar #16 Halyard winch on the mast. All the winches are self-tailing with clever Italian folding winch handles.

The cockpit is deep, comfortable and even the seats have drains. There are three cockpit drains below. Behind the tiller is an “Aft Cabin” handy for storage, complete with lines, lifejackets and even a 4-man Viking life-raft.

With a narrow, sea-worthy ocean design, with a deep weighted keel, Cascade 36’s are a forgiving boat, known for “self steering like a dream”.
